The EORTC and the University of Groningen are seeking a PhD researcher to address unmet needs in head and neck cancer clinical trials as part of a four-year PhD research fellowship. This role offers the opportunity to gain expertise in cancer clinical study methodologies while being fully immersed in the activities of an international academic research organisation. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the EORTC medical team and University of Groningen investigators, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team within EORTC and engaging with the Head and Neck Cancer Group (HNCG) network. The fellow will receive support from a diverse team of experts, including medical doctors, biostatisticians, and Quality of Life specialists. The fellowship is based at EORTC Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, offering a highly stimulating, professional, and friendly international environment. The PhD trajectory is overseen by the University of Groningen in the Netherlands and includes PhD development training, incorporating various training elements to enhance key competencies. In addition to a few mandatory courses, an individual development plan will be tailored to the fellows needs. Credits can be obtained through different activities, and at least a few visits to Groningen are expected. The EORTC promotes multidisciplinary cancer research across Europe, conducting studies in over 928 institutions across 36 countries. Its network comprises more than 5,300 scientists and clinicians collaborating within 18 active groups and task forces. EORTC works closely with patients throughout their cancer journey, from diagnosis and treatment to the psychosocial challenges they may face post-cancer. Main responsibilities / Major Activities The fellow will receive a general training on methodology of clinical trials, specifically how to develop and conduct cancer clinical trials at the European level. S/he will predominantly be involved with the activities of the HNCG. Investigate the adequacy of eligibility criteria of trials for the real-world population Contribute to the development of the research strategy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma by: Describing the treatment patterns in Europe Analyzing the challenges and potential solutions for clinical study designs in such a rare entity Contribute to the development of methods to integrate of HRQoL data in the decision-making process in a way that is relevant to the patients Participate in the predevelopment and development of HNC studies that emerge from strategic discussions Furthermore, the fellow will be involved in medical reviews of ongoing studies, the day-to-day management of clinical trials and reporting on own research findings and groups results. Profile Be an early career medical doctor with experience in the treatment of head and neck cancer (at least 2 years of clinical experience). Basic understanding of medical statistics. Have a special interest in clinical cancer research methodology. Preferably have a background in the conduct of clinical trials and cancer research. Be fluent in English. Be computer literate. Be able to work in an international environment. Have a team spirit and excellent communication skills.
